Structure Settlements

"Structure settlements" is a term used when there is serious amount of money involved as settlement to a deceased individual or an individual who has been physical injured because of an accident. In structure settlements, victims sell the financial asset to another company which in turn invests the same in an annuity or bond. The company who buys the structure settlements may pay the entire amount to the seller as a discounted lump sum, or could pay a part of it to the seller for meeting his current needs. The remaining is paid by the buyer to the seller in the form of fixed installments over a period of time.

People who negotiate with the defendant in the court of law over the money to be meted out in the form of damages should be careful while settling on the total payment, especially if the plaintiff is not able to work for a longer period of time, or is not physically able to work at all. These financial payments calculations could be calculated and the plaintiff should consult his attorney before deciding on any amount or proposition put forward by the defendant and his attorney.

Structure settlements are fixed and the time period is also determined before entering into the financial agreement. The time period could be for years or for life. The structure settlements would also include fees paid to the lawyer, in case the lawyer prefers it over a period of time. If the plaintiff is not happy with structure settlements, then his only option is to sell it to another company which is willing to buy it as an annuity.
