Annuity Settlements

When a person meets with an accident, the insurance company of the person who was responsible for the accident will offer a structured settlement to the injured person. This agreement, under which the insurance company agrees to pay an annuity for a fixed length of time is done through a court. Annuity settlements can even be made for the life time of the claimant and will include installments paid at regular intervals, though payment of lump sums is not unknown.
 
Payments against annuity settlements are never taxed by the IRS and the contract makes for a guarantee. Such settlements involve long term financial dealings and it is vital that the claimant is assured of the annuity provider's credentials. Some such assignments can even be transferred  to third parties by the insurance company if it is qualified at the start of the contract.

There are times when the person receiving the annuity payments may require a lump sum in order to streamline credit or meet some emergencies. It is possible to sell such annuity settlements and receive a lump sum instead of the installments. It is also possible to convert only a part of the annuity settlements into a lump sum. There are laws that govern such transactions and can vary from state to state. This requires court intervention that will enable the person or company paying out the lump sum to get the future annuity settlements assigned to them legally. This is a compulsory step that protects the rights of both parties.
